Sri Lanka Navy marks World Hydrography Day
In parallel with the 101st World Hydrography Day that falls on 21st June, Sri Lanka Navy marked the annual celebration at the auditorium of National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) today (21st June 2022). The event which was presided over by the Chief of Staff of the Navy and the Joint Chief Hydrographer to the Government of Sri Lanka and Chief Hydrographer of the Navy, Rear Admiral YN Jayarathne, was attended by other stake holders in the field of hydrography.
By a UN resolution that was passed in 2005, the 21st June in each year is dedicated to celebrate the World Hydrography Day. The main purpose of this day is to promote the contribution of hydrography to the world. This year’s theme of World Hydrography Day is “Hydrography - contributing to the United Nations Ocean Decade".
It further aims to highlight how hydrography as an applied science supports the sustainable use of the oceans through provision of up to date hydrographic data for safe navigation, infrastructure development, deep sea exploration, environmental planning, rescue operations and delineation of international maritime boundaries.
The occasion was attended by a group of senior officers from the Navy Headquarters and Sri Lanka Coast Guard, officials from National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency, distinguished invitees and officers attached to the Sri Lanka Navy Hydrographic Service.
