Navy marks International Women's Day
The lady officers and women sailors of the Sri Lanka Navy organized a special musical event - ‘Naval Angels’ Eve’, to mark the International Women's Day which fell on 08th March. The colourful event, held at the Admiral Somathilake Dissanayake Auditorium in the Navy Headquarters on 15th March 2022, was graced by Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne and President of Navy Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs Chandima Ulugetenne.
“Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow” is the United Nations’ theme for International Women’s Day for 2022. History bears testament to the fact that women across the world have played a pivotal role during wars at different times. During Sri Lanka’s humanitarian efforts in eradicating terrorism that plagued the country for nearly three decades, lady officers and women sailors carried out their responsibilities with great courage and determination while fulfilling their social responsibility as a woman. This special musical show unveiled the hidden artistic talents of the naval women who deserve recognition for striking a good balance between their personal and naval career.
Meanwhile, the lady officers and women sailors also found the opportunity to showcase their creative talents through handicraft, knitting and paintings, exhibited on the sidelines of the event.
Further, Commander of the Navy and President of Navy Seva Vanitha Unit, heaped praise on the Organizing Committee, lady officers and women sailors for successful organization of the event, marking the International Women's Day.
The proceedings of the event were organized adhering to COVID-19 protocols. Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral YN Jayarathne, Deputy Chief of Staff and Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Upul De Silva, Director Generals, Executive Committee Members of Navy Seva Vanitha Unit, flag rank officers, officers, lady officers and women sailors were also present on this occasion.
