Navy launches mangrove planting programme to coincide with International Mangrove Day
Sri Lanka Navy conducted a beach cleaning and mangrove planting programme to coincide with the International Mangrove Day. These programmes were held under the auspices of Commander North Central Naval Area, Rear Admiral Bandula Senarathna in the beach areas of Talaimannar and Nachchikuda today (26th July 2021).
The mangrove system plays an important role in conserving the biodiversity of the coastal ecosystem and maintaining the stability between marine and terrestrial ecosystems. The Navy, being a key player for the protection of the mangrove ecosystem launched this beach cleaning and mangrove planting programme in conjunction with the International Mangrove Day.
The event was held adhering to COVID-19 protocols in force due to pandemic concerns and it was attended by a limited group of naval personnel including the Deputy Area Commander North Central Naval Area, Commodore Nilantha Hewawitharana.
