Navy Seva Vanitha Unit organizes largest ever blood donation campaign
A blood donation campaign organized by the Navy Seva Vanitha Unit (NSVU), going by the directives of its President, Mrs. Chandima Ulugetenne, was held covering each Naval Command today (24th May 2021). Meanwhile, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne also took time off to call at the blood donation drive held at the Navy Headquarters.
Due to the prevailing outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, the blood reserves of Blood Banks established in hospitals as well as National Blood Transfusion Service have decreased, as donors find it difficult to donate blood. Accordingly, at a request made by the National Blood Transfusion Service, Apeksha Hospital and other hospitals from Sri Lanka Navy, this blood donation campaign was organized by the Navy Seva Vanitha Unit, covering each Naval Command, to coincide with the forthcoming Vesak Poya Day.
As such, 576 naval personnel from the Western Naval Command, 328 from the North Central Naval Command, 105 from the Northwestern Naval Command, 341 from the Northern Naval Command, 81 from the Southeastern Naval Command and 180 naval personnel from the Southern Naval Command contributed for this timely initiative all along the day (24th May), making the tally of blood donors to 1611.
All these programmes were organized adhering to COVID-19 protocols in force for the prevention of the transmission of the pandemic. Meanwhile, the Eastern Naval Command is set to organize its blood donation campaign on 30th May 2021.
