Navy’s first Sniper Firing Competition concludes on successful note
The Naval Sniper Firing Competition- 2020, organized for the first time by Sri Lanka Navy, got underway at the Naval Dockyard, Trincomalee on 14th December 2020. On completion of the competition, the prize awarding ceremony was held under the patronage of Commander Eastern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Ruwan Perera in Trincomalee on 20th December.
The six-day competition held in selected land and maritime focused environments at the Naval Dockyard, has been organized with the aim of ameliorating the professional skills of naval snipers. The competition was participated by qualified snipers from the Naval Infantry branch, Special Boat Squadron and Marine Battalion. In addition, the Navy also expects to develop the confidence of naval snipers SBS and Marines engaging in Maritime Operations, Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) Operations and Military Operations in Urban Terrains (MOUT), through this nature of competitions.
Exhibiting stellar performance in the competition, Lieutenant Commander (Marine) PKS Mahinda won the shield for the “Best Individual Performance”, scoring the highest marks in overall events. Meanwhile, Master Chief Petty Officer (SBS) TGNS Kumara and Leading Seaman (SBS) HRPJS Rathnayake clinched the shield given away for the ‘Best Shooting Team’. The event was also attended by Commanding Officer Special Boat Squadron, Captain Thusitha Daminda and the training staff of the SBS.
