Navy cleans plastic and polythene collected on Trincomalee sea bed

Sri Lanka Navy initiated a programme to clear plastic and polythene collected on the sea bed, covering the Trincomalee sea area on 02nd November 2020.

The Navy is constantly contributing to the cleaning of the coastline around the island to prevent damage to the marine ecosystem and its biodiversity due to careless dumping of plastic and polythene waste. Accordingly, this particular programme was carried out by Eastern Naval Command to clean up the coastal marine environment from inadvertently dumping plastic and polythene waste into the beach from Koneshwaram to the District General Hospital, Trincomalee.

The Navy was able to remove a lot of waste, including plastic and polythene that had accumulated and floated off the coast, thereby preventing damage to the coastal ecosystem.

Further, a diving team attached to the Eastern Naval Command engaged in this timely drive and it was also assisted by the Trincomalee Police.
