Nine persons engaged in fishing without valid permits apprehended by Navy

Nine(09) persons who were engaging in illegal fishing without valid permits were apprehended by Navy during a patrol conducted in the seas off Kalmunai area on 09^th July 2020.

Sri Lanka Navy has been conducting regular patrols to nab the illegal fishers who use unauthorized means and engage in illegal fishing without permits in the territorial waters. On the patrolling in the seas off Kalmunai, SLNS Shakthi had detected a group of persons on a suspicious craft who engaged in fishing using diving gear. During further search, it was revealed that they didn’t hold any permit for diving and sufficient documents to prove their identi.ty. These persons along with the craft, diving gear and other fishing gear were taken into naval custody.

The suspects were in the ages between 23 to 62. Meanwhile, the suspects along with the seized items were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector-Kalmunai for onward action.
