Navy apprehends 06 persons for engaging in fishing without valid permits

The Navy apprehended 06 persons who were engaging in illegal fishing without valid permits, in the seas off the Old jetty in Thalaimannar on 09th July 2020.

Sri Lanka Navy has been conducting regular patrols to curb illegal fishing practices in the territorial waters. During a similar operation, a group of naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command had detected some suspicious craft, while patrolling in the seas off the Old jetty in Thalaimannar. During further search, 06 persons engaged in fishing on a dinghy without valid permits were taken into naval custody. Along with the suspects few diving gear and fishing gear were also seized.

The suspects were identified as residents of Thaulpadu area in Mannar, aged 21 to 43. Meanwhile, the suspects along with the seized items were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector-Mannar for onward action.
