Navy launches series of beach cleaning programmes in Northern Naval Command
In line with the beach cleaning drives of the Sri Lanka Navy, the Northern Naval Command launched a series of beach cleaning programmes on 04th and 05th July 2020, in order to preserve the pristineness of the beaches in the Jaffna Peninsula.
These beach clean-up drives were held under the guidance of the Deputy Chief of Staff and Commander Northern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Kapila Samaraweera, to augment the initiatives of the Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva, mooted with a view to conserve coastal belt under the Green and Blue Project. Accordingly, these programmes were held at the beaches of Analaitivu, Mankumban, Pallikuda, Delft, Wallan, Marsankudal, Chundikulam and beach sides belonging to naval bases.
Naval personnel attached to the Northern Naval Command actively took part in these events and successfully marked the day’s end removing heaps of garbage including plastic and polythene scattered along the beaches.
These programmes were held in conformity with the health guidelines and measures to mitigate COVID-19 pandemic. Further, the Navy will continue to undertake similar programmes in view of preserving the pristineness of the beaches in the country.
