Naval Deployment ‘Kalmunai’ commissioned as SLNS ‘Deegayu’
Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva today 04th July 2020 presided over the occasion of the commissioning of the Naval Deployment ‘Kalmunai’ in the Southeastern Naval Command as SLNS ‘Deegayu’ on an auspicious note.
Having established as a Naval Detachment belonging to the Eastern Naval Command in 2010, it became Naval Detachment ‘Kalmunai’ on 30th July 2012 with the declaration of the Southeastern Naval Command. Subsequently, the Naval Detachment ‘Kalmunai’ was elevated as a Naval Deployment on 01st August 2018 and Commander MNM Arshad was its first Commanding Officer who led 190 naval personnel as its initial crew.
The pinnacle moment of its achievements being a naval establishment reached on 04th July 2020 with the commissioning ceremony held under the patronage of Commander of the Navy. The occasion was also attended by Director General Operations, Director General Engineering, Commander Southeastern Naval Area and a host of senior officers and sailors. At present there are 190 naval personnel including 09 officers performing duties at this establishment. The base is commanded by Commander KGNB Senawirathna, as the Commanding Officer.
Following the Easter Sunday attack on April 21, 2019, this establishment did a tremendous job in protecting the area's vulnerabilities and public property and ensuring peace and security in the area. Apart from that SLNS ‘Deegayu’ will continue to conduct 24-hour RADAR surveillance beach patrols, mobile patrols, cordon searches, roadblocks and special deployments in view of strengthening the security in the area.
