Foundation stone laid for proposed rehabilitation centre in Nittambuwa, construction work to be undertaken by Navy
In line with the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the foundation stone laying ceremony of the proposed rehabilitation centre for drug addicts was held under the patronage of Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Major General (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne on 26th June 2020. The occasion was also attended by Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva.
This magnanimous effort is also supported by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the government of Germany. The construction of the building is scheduled to be completed by the Navy with the help of the Navy's engineers and technicians. The planned rehabilitation centre is targeted to rehabilitate nearly 1,000 individuals who fall prey to the unfortunate plight of drug addiction.
The occasion was also attended by Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ravinatha Aryasinha, dignitaries from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and Embassy of Germany as well as several other government officials.
