Unregistered traditional boat seized by Navy

The Navy apprehended a person engaged in illegal fishing using an unregistered traditional boat (Wallam), during a search carried out in the seas off Uppukulam on 21st June 2020.

The Navy has been conducting regular patrols in island’s waters for the prevention of illegal fishing practices. During a similar operation, naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command nabbed this individual engaging in illegal fishing on an unregistered traditional boat. Along with the suspect, the boat and its outboard motor were also taken into naval custody.

The accused was identified as a 45 year old resident of Mannar. The suspect together with seized items was handed over to the Assistant Directorate of Fisheries in Mannar for further investigation.
