Navy apprehends 07 persons for engaging in illegal fishing using unauthorized nets

The Navy apprehended 07 persons who were engaging in illegal fishing using unauthorized nets and without fishing passes, during a search conducted in the sea area off Chittikkadu in Kayts, Jaffna on 11th June 2020.

The Navy has been conducting regular patrols in island’s waters for the prevention of illegal fishing practices. Accordingly, naval personnel attached to the Northern Naval Command during a search conducted in the sea area off Chittikkadu in Kayts, Jaffna nabbed these 07 persons who were engaging in fishing with unauthorized nets and without fishing passes. Along with the suspects, 01 traditional boat (Vallam), 01 outboard motor, 01 unauthorized net and about 35kg of illegally caught fish were taken into naval custody.

The accused who are from 25 to 51 years of age were identified as residents of Allappiddi in Kayts. Meanwhile, the apprehended persons together with the seized items were handed over to the Assistant Directorate of Fisheries in Jaffna for onward investigation.
