Navy apprehends 03 persons engaged in fishing blasting explosive

Navy apprehended 03 persons who engaged in illegal fishing blasting explosive, during a search operation carried out at Malaimunthal sea area in Trincomalee, on 09^th May 2020.

Sri Lanka Navy is conducting continuous operations to curb such illegal acts at all times since illegal fishing practice is extremely destructive to the surrounding ecosystem, as the explosion often destroys the underlying habitat that supports the fish. Accordingly, Eastern Naval Command apprehended 03 persons with 10kg of fish caught by blasting explosive (Dynamite), during a raid carried out at Malaimunthal sea area. A dinghy, few diving gear and a mobile phone used by them were also taken into Naval custody.

The suspects who are in the ages between 28-33, are residents of Mohothtuwaram and Ichchalampaththu areas. They along with the apprehended items were handed over to the Assistant Directorate of Fisheries-Trincomalee for onward action.
