Six (06) persons held by Navy for destroying mangrove habitats
Sri Lanka Navy apprehended 02 persons who were destroying mangrove habitats, during a raid conducted in Mundalampiddi lagoon in Mannar on 11th April 2020.
Sri Lanka Navy is playing a vital role for the protection of ocean resources, marine ecosystem as well as fisheries resources. Accordingly, naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command, during a patrol in Mundalampiddi area, nabbed these 06 persons who were destroying mangrove habitats in the lagoon area. Along with the suspects, 03 machetes, diving gear, a traditional boat and an outboard motor were also taken into custody. The apprehended persons were identified as residents of Mannar area, from 26 to 31 years of age. The apprehended persons and seized items were handed over to the Illuppaikaddawai Police for onward investigation.
A handful of reckless people are trying to destroy mangrove habitats, which are very helpful in preventing of coastal erosion. Meanwhile, the Navy constantly stay vigilant to prevent such destructive actions. Apart from that, the Navy has successfully launched a number of mangrove plantation projects in most of the mangrove ecosystems in the island. These projects are operating in full swing in Northern, North Central, Northwestern and Southeastern Naval Commands, with the purpose of protecting and preserving the coastal belt of the island.
