Debris collected under Mapalagama Bridge removed before possible flood threat
The Navy on 08th April 2020 sprang into action to remove debris and logs collected under the Mapalagama Bridge in Galle, posing a flood threat with possible heavy downpour in time to come.
As a result of possible rainy weather condition in coming days, it is expected that the water level in the Gin River is likely to increase. In preparation for this eventuality, the Navy stepped forward to remove debris and other remaining collected under the Mapalagama Bridge to avert possible floods, following the instruction of Commander Southern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Kassapa Paul.
The task was executed by naval personnel of the Diving Unit and Marine Battalion, attached to the Southern Naval Command. This programme was carried out for the safety of the people living on the banks of the river, in the event of possible flood risk.
While playing a vital role to control the looming threat of COVID-19 pandemic in the country, the Navy remains vigilant to protect community from eventualities which may arise.
