Navy nabs 03 suspects in possession of turtle flesh and eggs

The Navy apprehended 03 persons in possession of turtle flesh and eggs, during a search operation conducted in Seenanweli beach area today (23rd March 2020).

Sri Lanka Navy has been conducting regular operations to safeguard the marine resources in island’s territorial waters. During a search operation conducted by naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command in the beach area of Seenanweli a suspicious dinghy had been detected. When further searched, the naval personnel managed to find about 11kg of sea turtle flesh and 150 sea turtle eggs in the dinghy. Accordingly, the 03 persons aboard were taken into custody, along with sea turtle flesh, eggs, dinghy and other fishing gear.

The apprehended persons were identified as residents of Ilangathurei in Trincomalee, aged 36, 44 and 50. Meanwhile, the accused and seized items were handed over to the office of Wildlife Conservation in Trincomalee for onward investigation.
