Navy apprehends 02 persons with unauthorized nets

The Navy apprehended 02 persons with unauthorized fishing nets, during a coordinated raid carried out with the Police STF in Hambantota on 17^th March 2020.

Navy has been conducting regular operations to prevent negative impacts on marine ecosystem. A group of naval personnel attached to the Southern Naval Command combining with Panwewa Police STF and Fisheries Inspector of Hambantota carried out this raid in Sippikulama and Barrack Street areas of Hambantota and found over 190kg of nylon nets stored for selling. Two (02) suspects in connection to this incident were also taken into naval custody.

The apprehended persons have been identified as residents of Hambantota, aged 33 and 43. The accused along with seized nets were handed over to the Fisheries Department of Hambantota for onward investigation.
