Navy apprehends 02 persons for illegal harvesting of sea cucumber

The Navy apprehended 02 persons who were illegally harvesting sea cucumber, during a patrol conducted in the sea area Southeast of Kalmunai Point on 06^th March 2020.

The Navy has been conducting regular patrols in island’s waters for the prevention of illegal fishing practices. As an extension of these operations, naval personnel attached to the Northern Naval Command held these 02 persons who were illegally harvesting sea cucumber at night in the sea area Southeast of Kalmunai Point. Along with the persons 602 sea cucumbers, 01 dinghy and diving and fishing gear were seized by the Navy.

The accused have been identified as residents of Settipulam in Jaffna and Mulankavil. The suspects together with illegally harvested sea cucumber and other fishing and diving gear were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Velani for onward action.
