Navy apprehends person for illegal harvesting of sea cucumber

The Navy apprehended a person who was illegally harvesting sea cucumber in the sea area Southeast of Kalmunai point, Jaffna, on 04^th February 2020.

The Navy has been conducting regular operations in Island’s waters for curbing illegal activities and during a similar operation conducted by Northern Naval Command in the sea area Southeast of Kalmunai point, the Navy managed to take this suspect into custody for engaging in illegal harvest of sea cucumber. Along with the suspect 930 Nos. of illegally harvested sea cucumbers, a dinghy and other fishing gear were seized by the Navy.

The apprehended person have been identified as a resident of Poonakari area, Jaffna aged 25. The suspect together with sea cucumber, the dinghy and other fishing gear were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Velani for onward investigation.
