Navy apprehends 03 persons for engaging in fishing using unauthorized nets

The Navy during a patrol in the sea area off Udappuwa in Puttalam on 27th February 2020 apprehended 03 persons who engaged in illegal fishing using unauthorized fishing nets.

The Navy has been conducting regular operations to prevent illegal means of fishing in island’s waters. As part of these operations, naval personnel attached to the Northwestern Naval Command have apprehended these 03 suspects for using unauthorized fishing nets to catch fish. Along with the suspects 02 dinghies, 02 unauthorized fishing nets and several fishing gear were taken into naval custody. The accused have been identified as residents of Kalpitiya, aged 26 and 36.

Accordingly, the apprehended persons, dinghies, unauthorized nets and other fishing gear were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries of Puttalam for onward investigation.
