Navy’s contribution in keeping the coastal eco system protected

Another beach clean-up drive of the Sri Lanka Navy, mooted in view of conservation of beaches around the island, was successfully carried out at several beaches in the Northern and Southern Naval Areas, on 18^th and 19^th January 2020.

The Navy has been conducting a number of environmental friendly projects including beach clean-up programmes on the sidelines of His Excellency the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s concept 'Surakshitha Parisarayak' (Secure Environment).

As part of the programme, the Jaffna and Kankesanthurei beaches in the Jaffna Peninsula were cleaned by the Navy. In the same vein, the Navy also cleaned-up the beach area extended to Galle town from SLNS Dakshina, the beach line from Oruwella to Madilla and the surrounding beach area of Hambanthota town, belonging to the South Coast. The untiring effort of the naval personnel resulted in restoring the previous charm of the beaches which had been severely polluted due to human activities and natural reasons.

Under the directives of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva, naval personnel in each Naval Command are engaging in keeping the coastal belt around the island clean and free of pollution to draw the attraction of both local and foreign tourists.
