Person apprehended with 02 charges made of water gel sticks, during Navy-Police operation

The Navy, during a combined search operation conducted with the Police in Devigal beach area of Nilaweli, apprehended a suspect with 02 charges made of water gel sticks, used for illegal fishing on 9^th January 2020.

Since explosive fishing causes harmful effects on the fishery resources and beautiful coral reefs on the seabed, Sri Lanka Navy has been conducting regular operations for the protection of these resources and marine environment. During a similar operation conducted by the Navy and the Police, a suspected person has been searched at the Devigal beach area of Nilaweli and found these charges used for illegal fishing, in his possession.

The charges contained 02 water gel sticks, 01 non electric detonator, 01 electric detonator and 02 safety fuses. The apprehended person has been identified as a resident of Erakkandi in Trincomalee, aged 49.

The accused along with explosive items was handed over to the Kuchchaweli Police for further investigation.
