Navy recovers chargers and gelignite sticks used for illegal fishing
Two (02) chargers and few gelignite sticks used for illegal fishing were recovered by the Navy during raids carried out at Nilaweli and Poduwakattu areas on 29th December 2019.
These two charges which were hidden in a coconut palm near the Sallisambaltivu beach in Nilaweli were recovered during the operations carried out to curb the illegal fishing done with explosive and unauthorized means. Navy identified that 01 water gel stick, 02 safety fuses in the length two feet, 02 non electric detonators and 100g of unidentified gun powder have been used for producing these charges.
Further on the same day, a bag which had entangled to a fishing rod of a fisherman at Poduwakattu sea area in Trincomalee, was handed over to the Navy. By the search of this bag Navy found 05 gelignite sticks, 03 detonators and 01 feet long safety fuse and these items have been kept under safe custody of the Navy.
It is suspected that the recovered explosive items had been hidden for later use of fishing. SL Navy keeps on vigil eye and conducts operations to prevent the destruction caused to maritime eco system by the use of explosive for fishing
