110kg of fish caught using explosive recovered by Navy
The Navy recovered 110kg of illegally caught fish, using dynamite, in Lankapatuna area, Trincomalee on 15th December 2019.
Sri Lanka Navy has been conducting regular patrols and operations in a bid to protect the marine ecosystem of the island. During a search operation in Lankapatuna area, the Navy found suspicious boxes hidden in mangrove shrubs and recovered a stock of fish that was caught using explosive, in those boxes.
It is believed that the suspects might have hidden the stock of fish with the intention of retrieving it later, having noticed the presence of the Navy. Meanwhile, the seized stock of fish was handed over to the Assistant Directorate of Fisheries, Trincomalee for onward action.
Since blast fishing is extremely destructive to the surrounding ecosystem, as the explosion often destroys the underlying habitat that supports fish, the Navy is often conducting operations to bring those involved in such activities to justice.
