Navy apprehends suspect with sea turtle flesh
The Navy apprehended a suspect with sea turtle flesh in Pallikuda area, Chavakachcheri today (10th December 2019).
The Navy that is playing a pivotal role in the preservation of ocean resources in waters belonging to the island and its coastal belt, has spotted 02 suspicious motorbikes in the Pallikuda beach area, Chavakachcheri during a naval operation. As the motorbikes were inspected, 06kg of sea turtle flesh has been found. A suspect in connection to the incident was also held at this location. He has been identified as a resident of Chettiyarkulam, aged 20. The suspect along with sea turtle flesh was handed over to the Pooneryn Police for onward investigation.
The Navy, committed to its bounden duty for the protection of marine resources, has been conducting regular operations in which over 188kg of sea turtle flesh has been found in year 2019. Further, 12 suspects has also been held for engaging in this racket. Apart from that, the Navy has released a number of live sea turtles held in captivity by people.
The Navy has been conducting a wide range of programmes for the conservation of sea turtles, including release of turtle hatchlings, to make a difference and support the sea turtle ecosystem in a positive manner.
