Navy throws its weight behind beach cleaning to make pollution-free beaches around the island
Several beach cleaning programmes of the Sri Lanka Navy were conducted in Northern and Southern Naval Commands on 07th December 2019.
The Navy has launched a series of programmes to safeguard the natural environment, including the beaches around the island, joining hands with the President His Excellency Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s visionary concept; ‘Surakshitha Parisarayak’ (Secure Environment).
Accordingly, the Cashurina Beach of Karainagar in Jaffna, the Mandaitivu Beach and the beach of the Naval Dockyard, Trincomalee were cleaned as part of these clean-up drives. Meanwhile, the Navy also rendered assistance to clean several beaches in the southern coast which included the beaches of Mahamodara, Gintota and Oruwella in Tangalle.
With the dedication of the naval personnel who took part in these programmes, the beaches, which were polluted by natural causes and human activities, were made waste-free beaches once again. The event was attended by a large number of naval personnel, government officials and residents of respective areas.
Meanwhile, under the directives of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva, the Navy makes a concerted effort to keep the beaches, belonging to each Naval Command, free of pollution. As a result those pristine beaches have attracted a lot of local as well as foreign tourists.
