65kg of beedi leaves found during naval operation

During a search in the lagoon area northeast of the Mandaitivu Island on 11^th November 2019, the Navy recovered 65.35kg of beedi leaves.

The Northern Naval Command, during a search, had recovered this package of beedi leaves submerged in the lagoon area northeast of the Mandaitivu Island. The stock of beedi leaves is due to be handed over to the Jaffna Customs for onward investigation.

The Navy has been able to nab a number of suspects engaged in this illegal act as well as seized tons of beedi leaves attempted to be smuggled, during recent naval operations. The Navy will continue to stay watchful to prevent such attempts being made by racketeers in island’s waters.
