Fourteen persons held for engaging in fishing using unauthorized nets

During search operations carried out in the seas off Pulmoddai and Poduwakattu, the Navy apprehended 14 persons for using unauthorized fishing nets to catch fish.

Accordingly, the Eastern Naval Command during a patrol in the sea area off Pulmoddai today (20^th October 2019) apprehended 08 persons who engaged in fishing with unauthorized fishing nets. The Navy has also seized a fishing vessel, an outboard motor and a banned fishing net used for fishing. The arrested persons have been identified as residents of Puraniar Nagar, aged between 18 and 28 years.

Meanwhile, 06 persons who engaged in illegal fishing using unauthorized fishing nets in Poduwakattu seas were held by the same Naval Command during a patrol today. Along with the suspects a fishing vessel, an outboard motor and 02 unauthorized fishing nets were taken into naval custody. The arrested persons are residents of Trincomalee, aged between 23 and 38 years.

The suspects, fishing vessels, banned fishing nets and other fishing gear were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries, Trincomalee for further investigations.
