Navy apprehends person with a haul of conch shells

Navy apprehended a person with illegally kept conch shells, during a raid conducted at Arippu area in Silawathurai on 18th October 2019.

Accordingly, this suspect was apprehended during a raid conducted at Arippu area in Silawathurai by Northwestern Naval Command with 148 conch shells which are less than 70 mm in diameter. The suspect has been identified as a resident of Arippu, aged 30. He along with the haul of conch shells which was made ready for sale was handed over to Silawathurai Police for further investigation.

According to the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Act the possession, buying, displaying with the intention of selling, transporting or exporting of conch shells which are less than 70 mm in diameter has been banned.
