Navy renders assistance to people slashed by adverse weather
Under the directives of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva, the Navy is currently engaged in rescue and relief operations to save affected community, following adverse weather.
Navy flood relief operations are currently underway in the Southern and Western provinces and 24 relief teams along with 23 dinghies have been sent out to rescue people displaced by flash floods in affected areas.
Accordingly personnel attached to Navy Marines, Rapid Response Rescue and Relief Unit (4RU), Special Boat Squadron, Diving Unit have been attached to flood relief duties.
Meanwhile, a team of naval personnel cleaned debris collected at the underside of a bridge in Awittawa, Mathugama and helped swift downstream of water. Similarly, another group of naval personnel are currently working in full swing to clear the underside of Wakwella Bridge in Galle, as collection of tree branches under the bridge posed a flood risk in the area.
As of now the Navy has transferred nearly 1,000 civilians to safe locations and saved 93 persons caught up in flash floods. In this backdrop, flood relief operations of the Navy will be continued to look after affected people, even amidst adverse climatic conditions.
