Navy apprehends 06 persons for catching fish using unauthorized fishing nets
The Navy apprehended 06 persons who were catching fish using unauthorized fishing nets in the sea area off the Kadeawella Point on 23rd September 2019.
The Eastern Naval Command, during a patrol conducted in the seas off the Kadeawella Point, held these 06 persons for fishing using unauthorized fishing nets. The suspects have been identified as residents of Ichchalampattu, from 28 to 45 years of age. Further, an unauthorized fishing net, a dinghy and an outboard motor belonging to them were also seized by the Navy. Subsequently, the apprehended persons along with fishing gear belonging to them were handed over to the Assistant Directorate of Fisheries of Trincomalee for onward action.
Due to growing concerns over the negative environmental impacts produced by this type of nets, the Navy is determined to continue their patrols to ward off such illegal practices, in a bid to secure fish stocks and marine resources for human well-being.
