Two (02) persons apprehended for engaging in illegal fishing
A group of naval personnel held 02 persons for engaging in illegal fishing in Veththalaikarni area, Jaffna on 17th July 2019.
A group of naval personnel attached to the Northern Naval Command, during a search conducted in Veththalaikarni area, apprehended these suspects for engaging in fishing using unauthorized fishing nets. Along with the suspects the Navy also seized a dinghy, an outboard motor, a 75m long unauthorized fishing net and 600kg of illegal fish catch.
The apprehended persons along with the dinghy, outboard motor, unauthorized fishing net and illegal fish catch were handed over to the Assistant Directorate of Fisheries in Jaffna for onward investigation. The fish population and marine resources are subjected to needless destruction as a result of illegal fishing methods practiced in Sri Lankan waters. As such the Sri Lanka Navy remains vigilant around the clock to apprehend people engage in illegal fishing and produce them for necessary legal action.
