Coral reef restoration project commences in Northern Naval Command
Yet another coral reef restoration project, initiated under the directives of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva, commenced in the Northern Naval Command on 04th July 2019. The restoration efforts took place off the shores of Kankasanthurei.
The prime aim of the effort is to conserve coral reefs which are subject to continued destruction due to a number of reasons. Accordingly, the naval personnel planted 11 reef balls with replanted corals, at its initial stage. The project was closely monitored by Commander Northern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Kapila Samaraweera. Further, the Navy will carry out regular monitoring of the project in order to ensure continual growth of the coral nursery.
Working hand in hand with the Navy’s Green and Blue concept (Neela Harith Sangramaya), a number of coral reef restoration projects have been initiated in a number of beach areas across the island as of now.
