Navy apprehends four persons with 1338kg of beedi leaves
Naval personnel apprehended four persons with 1338kg of beedi leaves at Puttalam and Nainativu island on 29th June 2019.
Accordingly, a group of naval personnel attached to the North Western Naval Command apprehended four persons who were transporting 1287kg of beedi leaves by three dinghies at Puttalam lagoon area.
The apprehended persons have been identified as residents of Puttalam and Kalpitiya, aged 32, 33, 39 and 46. The suspects along with the stock of beedi leaves was handed over to the Colombo Customs for onward investigation.
On the same day, a naval team attached to the Northern Naval Command on patrol in Nainativu island, found 51kg of abandoned beedi leaves packed as parcels. These parcels of beedi leaves were handed over to Customs Office, Jaffna for onward action..
The Navy will continue its operations with a firm commitment to ward off illegal activities of this nature.
