Navy’s contribution in planting and conservation of coral reefs
Sri Lanka National Olympic Committee in coordination with the Sri Lanka Navy commenced a coral planting and conservation project at the Polhena beach line in Matara on 25th June 2019.
This coral planting and conservation project was initiated by Sri Lanka National Olympic Committee which is a global partner of environmental sustainability, in concurrent with the Olympic Day celebrations fell on 25th June.
The basic objective of this project is to conserve the decaying coral reefs at present due to various reasons and the project is expected to get underway for 03 consecutive years under the supervision of the Sri Lanka Navy. Further, an information centre for coral conservation and maritime creatures has been opened by the National Olympic Committee.
Olympic Silver Medalist Mrs. Susanthika Jayasinghe graced this occasion as the chief guest. Senior DIG Southern Province Roshan Fernando and number of distinguished people in the area were also present on the event.
In addition to this, coral replanting projects are carried out in the beach areas island wide by Sri Lanka Navy under the Navy’s Green-Blue eco friendly concept.
