Two persons apprehended for engaging in dynamite fishing
During a raid conducted in Erakkandi, naval personnel in coordination with the officials of Kuchchaweli Police apprehended 02 persons with a stock of fish illegally caught using dynamite in Erakkandi.
The 02 suspects were initially held in the beach area of Erakkandi, with 104kg of fish illegally caught using dynamite. After the suspects being questioned further, another 224kg of fish were recovered from their houses today (02nd June). The stock of fish was made ready to be sold when the seizure was made.
The suspects have been identified as residents of Erakkandi, aged 48 and 22. The two suspects along with the stock of fish were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector, through Kuchchaweli Police for onward action.
Since the fish breeding grounds, marine plants and animals and small fish are destroyed by this type of illegal means of fishing, Sri Lanka Navy remains extremely vigilant to avert such kinds of illegal activities taking place in Sri Lankan waters.
