Person engaged in fishing using explosives held by Navy

Naval personnel apprehended a suspect who engaged in fishing using explosives at Piergama beach area on 24th May.

Accordingly, a group of naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command, whilst on a routine patrol, apprehended the suspect for using explosives for fishing practices. The suspect has been identified as a resident of Thalaimannar, aged 35.

Along with the suspect, 270kg of illegally caught fish were also seized by the Navy. The 35 year old suspect and the stock of fish were subsequently handed over to the Assistant Directorate of Fisheries in Mannar for onward action.

Meanwhile, the Navy stays alert around the clock to prevent blast fishing practiced by a handful of people with a scant regard over its repercussion on the marine ecosystem.
