Navy nabs 6 persons for destroying coral reefs

A Naval team apprehended 6 persons who had destroyed coral reefs at Kallaru area, today (16th April).

Accordingly, 6 persons who were breaking corals by using fishing nets, while pretending as fishermen, were apprehended by the crew of a Inshore Patrol Craft attached to the Northwestern Naval Command.

Two dinghies, 2 OBMs and a fishing net had been taken into naval custody and those items along with the suspects are due to be handed over to Fisheries Inspector-Puttalam for onward investigation.

It has been observed by the Navy that some persons who disguised as fishermen, engage in such illegal attempts in the seas off Sri Lanka. These illegal activities damage coral and granite reefs and even cause destruction of fish breeding places. Therefore, Sri Lanka Navy has deployed ships and craft to carry out day and night patrol in search of these illegal attempts. Due to patrols Navy conducts round the clock, most of the illegal activities have been foiled.
