A person with 80kg of fish caught using dynamite arrested

A group of naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command arrested a person with 80kg of fish caught using dynamite, during a raid carried out in the general area of Mohoththuwaram, Trincomalee yesterday (26^th March). The stock of fish was made ready to be transported by a cab when the arrest was made. The suspect is a resident of Ichchalampaththu, aged 28. The suspect along with the cab and the stock of fish was handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Verugal for onward legal action.

This year, the Navy managed to arrest several explosive distributors who trade these explosives for illegal fishing activities. This illegal fishing practice is extremely destructive to the surrounding ecosystem, as the explosion often destroys the underlying habitat that supports the fish. As such, Sri Lanka Navy is conducting continuous operations in waters around the island and remains vigilant to curb such illegal acts at all times.
