Commander of the Navy visits Southern Naval Command
Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva visited the Southern Naval Command on 21stand 22nd February. The Navy Commander was warmly received to the Southern Naval Command by Commander Southern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Kapila Samaraweera.
Vice Admiral Silva initially visited the Agricultural Project of Kirindioya Naval Detachment on 21st February and addressed the naval personnel attached to the Agricultural Project. During this meeting the Navy Commander praised the efforts of the naval personnel for neat and tidy arrangements of the project work. He also panted a mango sapling on the premises. Subsequently, Vice Admiral Silva made an inspection tour to the Naval Detachment established at the Hambantota harbour and inspected the radar centre installed on the premises. Meanwhile, the Commander Southern Naval Area briefed the Navy Commander about the Navy’s role of ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security) at the port of Hambantota. Head of Security at the Hambantota harbour, Rear Admiral, Jayantha Silva (Retd.) was also present on this occasion. Marking the last event of the first day itineraries, Commander of the Navy visited SLNS Ruhuna to review the progress of ongoing projects. He also planted a mango sapling there before addressing the naval personnel attached to the establishment.
On 22nd February, the Navy Commander visited SLNS Nipuna where Vice Admiral Silva also inspected divisions held in the attendance of naval personnel belonging to SLNS Dakshina and SLNS Nipuna. Thereupon, he addressed officers and sailors at the conference hall of SLNS Nipuna. Subsequently, Commander of the Navy made several visits to construction sites including the Naval Hospital, Naval Sewing Centre and Captain Logistics Department (South) as well. Next, Commander of the Navy toured SLNS Dakshina where he was also briefed about the role pertinent to the Southern Naval Command. A mango sapling was also planted on the premises to mark the visit of the Navy Chief. Finally, Vice Admiral Silva inspected the ships and craft belonging to the Southern Naval Command before touring the Naval Preschool operated under the auspices of SLN Welfare Unit and On-board Security Teams (OBST) operations centre in Galle, to conclude his two-day visit in the Southern Naval Command.
Heads of Departments and Commanding Officers of the Southern Naval Command were also present on these occasions.
