Navy assists to recover a stock of sand mined without permits
A troop of Naval Marine Force attached to the Eastern Naval Command in coordination with Sri Lanka Police and the officials of Sri Lanka Geological Survey and Mining Bureau recovered a stock of sand mined without permits during a raid carried out at Thippansetti area in Periya Kinniya, today (20 February).
Accordingly, about 15000 cubes of illegally mined sand from Mahaweli river (without permits) were recovered and further actions regarding this sand stock are being taken by Sri Lanka Police and Sri Lanka Geological Survey and Mining Bureau.
Further, several measures have been launched by Sri Lanka Navy in coordination with Sri Lanka Police and Sri Lanka Geological Survey and Mining Bureau to foil the illegal sand mining and Sri Lanka Navy have conducted special operations in sizing this racket. Accordingly, during the last month of January, Sri Lanka Navy assisted to nab a large number of illegal miners and large stocks of sand. Thereby, Navy's contribution prevents possible massive destruction to the environment.
