Children of naval families receive scholarships for their academic excellence
The ceremony to award scholarships to the children of naval families, who passed the grade 5 scholarship examination with flying colours, was held under the auspices of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva at the Admiral Somathilake Dissanayake Auditorium at SLNS Parakrama today (30th January). This scholarship programme was mooted by the Sri Lanka Navy Welfare Unit, as an incentive to the children of naval families, to encourage them to continue their education at the same level of enthusiasm.
As part of this scholarship programme, a total of 302 children of naval families who excelled in the grade 5 scholarship examination held in 2018 are entitled to receive cash incentives, each worth Rs. 5,000. The beneficiaries are from naval families of which members have been killed in action, disabled and are currently serving in the Navy. The first stage of this magnanimous programme was successfully launched today and three more similar programmes to be followed in due course. As part of its first stage, 06 children form naval families of which members have been killed in action and disabled received scholarships, apart from another 76 children whose guardians are currently in active service received cheques from Commander of the Navy, making the total number of recipients to 82.
Navy Chief of Staff, Rear Admiral Jagath Ranasinghe, Director General Services, Rear Admiral Ajith Samarasinghe, Director Naval Welfare, Commodore Senarath Wijesooriya, senior naval officers attached to the Naval Headquarters and Western Naval Command and parents of the beneficiaries were also present on this occasion.
