09 persons held for engaging in illegal activities
 

Navy held 09 persons who engaged in illegal activities in separate locations in the island over the past couple of days. The suspects got involved in acts such as illegal fishing, possessing and transferring drugs and fishing without valid pass, when they were apprehended by the Navy.

Based on information received, a group of naval personnel attached to the Western Naval Command held a person who was peddling heroin by a motor car at Gonahena, Delgoda on 17th December. Naval personnel also found 10g of heroin and 23 illegal pills in his possession and took the motor car he was driving into naval custody. The apprehended suspect and items were handed over to the Meegahawatta Police for onward action.

On receipt of a tip-off, a Bomb Disposal team attached to the Eastern Naval Command with the assistance of Kuchchaweli Police and naval sniffer dogs managed to recover an assortment of explosive items, during a search carried out in the beach area of Erakkandi on 18th December. The troops found 27 non electric detonators, 64 water gel sticks, 220g of C4 explosive, 12 safety fuses and 05 complete chargers, during the search. The items were handed over to the Kuchchaweli Police for further investigation.

Naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command, in the beach area of Kiranchi, apprehended 07 persons engaged in illegal fishing without a valid pass on 18th December. Along with the suspects, an unauthorized fishing net and some diving equipment were also taken into naval custody and they were handed over to the Nachchikuda Police for onward legal action.

Meanwhile, a person with 4.49kg of Kerala cannabis in his possession was apprehended in the general area of Cable House, Thalaimannar on 21st December. A group of naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command in coordination with the Thalaimannar Police conducted the raid to arrest the suspect. The arrested suspect and the stock of cannabis were handed over to the Thalaimannar Police for further investigation.
