Navy assists to apprehend 08 persons for engaging in illegal activities
Sri Lanka Navy assisted to apprehend 08 persons engaged in illegal acts at various locations in the island during the past few days. These suspects were held for engaging in illegal fishing.
A troop of Naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command apprehended two persons (02) who engaged in illegal fishing activities in Southbar area of Mannar on last 27th November. A dinghy and illegal catchment of Sea Cucumber 352 in number were also nabbed and they along with the suspects were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries-Mannar for legal proceedings.
On the same day (27th Nov), Naval personnel attached to the Southern Naval Command apprehended 03 persons who engaged in illegal fishing in the seas off Dodanduwa. A dinghy and fishing gears used by them were also taken into naval custody. The suspects, dinghy and fishing gears were handed over to Fisheries Inspector-Galle for onward action.
A person who engaged in illegal fishing with banned nets in Nawakkadu sea area was apprehended by a naval troop attached to the North Western Naval Command, on 28th November. Along with the person a banned net was also taken into naval custody. The suspect and the apprehended net were handed over to Fisheries Inspector-Puttalam for legal action.
Meanwhile, naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command apprehended 02 persons who were practicing illegal fishing in Kokilai lagoon, on 29th November. A dinghy and 3 banned nets were also nabbed. The suspects, dinghy and nabbed nets were handed over to Pulmudai Police for onward legal action.
Further, on 1st December, a suspicious parcel which was hidden in Wankalaipadu area was recovered by a troop of naval personnel attached to North Central Naval Command. Eighty five (85 kg) kilograms of Kendu leaves (wrapping leaves for Beedi) which were inside the parcel was taken into naval custody and it was handed over to Customs office-Jaffna for onward action.
