Navy’s assistance in providing relief measures for people affected by extreme weather
 

Under the directives of the Office of CDS and on information released by the Disaster Management Centre, Sri Lanka Navy’s relief teams are in action to provide assistance to the distressed people following the inclement weather in Southern and Western provinces in the island. Accordingly, 10 Naval relief teams with 07 dinghies and 02 Emergency Rescue Boats have deployed in affected areas. Naval personnel attached to the Marine Battalion and Rapid Response Rescue & Release Squadron (4RS) and also teams of Special Boat Squadron and Navy divers have already commenced relief work in view of restoring the lives of suffered people in respective areas.

Accordingly, four (04) relief teams are currently engaged in relief efforts in Neluwa, Thawalama, Imaduwa and Hininduma areas in Galle district and 06 Disaster Response teams have deployed in Mathugama, Walallavita, Bulathsinhala in Kaluthara district and Wattala in Colombo district to withdraw affected people from floods and to assist them with basic needs. Further, Navy has distributed 625 lunch packets for displaced community in Imaduwa area.

A Naval relief team was deployed to remove the debris clogged at the Baddegama, Agaliya bridge which had been making the area in danger of flooding due to congested downstream of water and rushed navy team into the work made the free down flow. As at now, Sri Lanka navy relief teams have assisted 236 persons and the Navy continues its service ahead amidst the adverse weather conditions.
