First poppy flower presented to Navy Commander
Sri Lanka Naval Association launched its poppy campaign today (12th September) with its President Admiral (retd) Daya Sandagiri presenting the first poppy flower to the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral Sirimevan Ranasinghe at the Naval Headquarters in Colombo.
The poppy with its crimson colour signifying the bloodshed in the battlefield is regarded as a symbol of remembrance. It was originally adopted to honour the war heroes who sacrificed their lives during the World War I. Sacrifices made by the valiant military personnel in the defence of the motherland are remembered with due gratitude and the proceeds from poppy sales are channeled for the welfare of their dependents as a tribute.
