Navy assists proceedings of Kandy Esala Perahera
 

The grand annual festival celebration of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) and four Devalas - Kandy Esala Perahera held from 16th – 28th August this year, on a colourful note in the sacred city of Kandy. Following the directives of the Naval Headquarters, naval personnel of SLNS Shilpa, guided by it Commanding Officer, Captain Nishantha Peiris extended their fullest cooperation for the successful conduct of this historical procession.

On the sidelines of procession proceedings the Navy deployed lifesaving teams and a boat service at Kandy Lake in the heart of the hill city and transferred 13 persons who were taken ill, for immediate treatment at hospital. Besides, the Navy made beautiful arrangements for the illumination of the ‘Diyathilaka Mandapaya’ located on the Kandy Lake premises and it received the centre of attention of the public. At the same time, naval personnel attached to the Rapid Response Rescue and Relief Unit (4RU) deployed dinghies for the conduct of traditional Water Cutting Ceremony (Diya Kepeema) in a secured and effective manner.

The meritorious contribution of the Sri Lanka Navy for the successful conduct of Kandy Esala Perahera was also highly appreciated by the Venerable Mahanayakas of both Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters, the chief lay custodian of Temple of the Tooth and four chief custodians of devalas.
