Navy foils illegal immigration attempt; 21 suspects apprehended
Naval personnel attached to the Fast Attack Craft belonging to the Western Naval Command, during their patrol to curb transnational crime in the territorial waters of the island, apprehended 21 suspects onboard suspicious trawler plying in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Sri Lanka yesterday (05th June).
Having spotted a suspicious trawler in the sea about 117 nautical miles off Chilaw, the Navy hurried two Fast Attack Craft to the location. Accordingly, the naval personnel were able to hold 21 illegal immigrants aboard. Among the suspects were 19 men and 02 women.
Subsequently, the suspects were brought to the Colombo harbour and handed over to the Harbour Police, Colombo for onward action, after administrating them with first aid and other medical treatment.
Sri Lanka Navy is playing a pivotal role in territorial waters of the island by undertaking around the clock patrols to successfully ward off all forms of illegal activities including illegal immigration.
