Navy assists in providing new technology to the first Agro Entrepreneurship model village of Sri Lanka in Haputale
The Geo Information System and the website designed for the first-ever Agro Entrepreneurship model village of Sri Lanka which was constructed In view of uplifting the lifestyle of the rural community in the island, by the Ministry of Agriculture under the " Gramashakthi" project, at Kanathewewa in Haputale was launched by Hon. Minister of Agriculture Mr Mahinda Amaraweera on last 21st July, at Sri Sangaraja Piriven temple in Kanathewewa.
The technological assistance required there was provided by the Information Technology Unit of SL Navy. Further, designing of a geo information system of the model village using GPS technology, installing a website in support for that system and creating a method for farmers to coordinate lively with the Agricultural Assistants were done by Naval Geo Information Systems Unit.
This project was completed within a short period of 7 days by the sailors attached to the Naval Geo Information Systems Unit under the supervision of Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Mrs Nimalka Dias and Senior Staff Officer (GIS) Commander Nadeera Kulapathy and awareness programmes on GPS technology have also been scheduled for the officers in Department of Agriculture who are responsible for the project
